I Bought a 1980's Mini CNC Lathe | Emco Compact 5 CNC
I bought the legendary Emco Compact 5 CNC lathe. This is a small Benchtop mini CNC machine made back in the 1980s for educational purposes.
It's an ideal machine to start with in the CNC world as there are a lot of educational documents and instructions available for this machine.
In this video I introduce you to the new addition to my workshop and show you all the features of the machine.
And if you wonder: There will be definitely still some Mini Lathe content here. I have planned some videos of the new Emco in the future but I have still a lot of projects in mind with my Mini Lathe.
I hope you enjoy this video and the new machine as much as I do.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
If you don't want to miss new videos on this machine and on my other projects, please consider to subscribe to my channel.
Thank you very much for your support! I really do appreciate that!

A Chuck To Clamp Them All | Making A Split Jaw Chuck For The Mini Lathe
Переглядів 65 тис.2 місяці тому
Special tasks require special tools. I have a lot of workholding options for my lathe but nothing for clamping special parts like thin washers or disks. So I came up with the idea of making myself an 80mm split jaw chuck for my Mini Lathe. This type of lathe chucks is often found on bigger industrial or CNC machines. As far as I know there is no 80mm version of a split jaw chuck available on th...
A Lathe Chuck Worth A Whole Machine | Installing A Quick Collet Chuck On The Mini Lathe
Переглядів 211 тис.3 місяці тому
A while ago I found a beautiful hand lever operated quick collet chuck on the used marked and had to buy it. Even if this chuck cost me as much as I payed for the whole lathe a few years ago. This chuck from the German manufacturer NANN allows to clamp or unclamp the workpiece while the machine is still running. That is a very special and handy feature. When I got the chuck it seemed to be abso...
Mini Lathe Compound Slide Rebuild to High Precision Standards Part 2/2
Переглядів 196 тис.4 місяці тому
Part 1/2: ua-cam.com/video/uC5HMXqaRDo/v-deo.html This is part 2 of the two part compound slide rebuild series. I made a new acme thread spindle and accordingly a new leadscrew nut with adjustment feature for minimizing the backlash. Along with some smaller parts I finish the compound slide in this video. From part 1 I didn't expect the project to be so elaborate in the end. But there where som...
How Everything Begun: Redoing The Mini Lathe Compound Slide. Again? Yes, Again! Part 1/2

Part 2/2: ua-cam.com/video/TG07FUPsl_U/v-deo.html Almost exactly 3 years ago, I started my first project on my Mini Lathe: installing proper bearings to the lathes compound slide. At the same time I thought to myselft why not filming the build process, make a video about it and drop it on UA-cam?! This was the beginning of my little UA-cam-channel here. Since then the channel grew quite constan...
All My Mini Lathe Modifications - What's Next?
Переглядів 41 тис.5 місяців тому
This is a compilation video about all the modifications I did till the end of 2023 since I started this UA-cam channel. I'm also talking a little bit about future plans and projects for this lathe as there is still a lot of things which can be improved. It is also time to say thanks to all of my viewers, subscribers and especially the patreon supporters! I hope you enjoy this compilation video....
How to Make a Boring Head - Part 2
Переглядів 267 тис.6 місяців тому
Part 1: ua-cam.com/video/HiZ7l2i_l_4/v-deo.html This is part 2 of my boring head build in which I finish this toolmaking project. In this second episode I make the adjustment screw with fine thread and dial and the bearing parts which hold the screw in place. After this I finish the main body parts including some milling into final shape and drilling all the boring bar holes. In the end I elect...
How to Make a Boring Head - Part 1
Переглядів 283 тис.6 місяців тому
Part 2: ua-cam.com/video/44vBR1tjNCs/v-deo.html This is again a toolmaking project I'm working on for quite some time now. I have something in mind where I need to bore several large holes for ball bearings which have to be quite accurate. For this the tool of choice is a boring head. As I had none in my toolbox I decided to make my own one. Due to the very limited manufacturing capabilities I ...
Fine-Feed for the Mini Lathe
Переглядів 47 тис.7 місяців тому
This is quick little upgrade to my Mini Lathe. The original gear combination for the power feed on these type of lathes is quite a bit fast for some applications. So I thought about a way of slowing down the feedrate a little bit. My first attempt with an extra gearmotor wasn't succesfull as the motor was way to weak to drive the leadscrew under load. To install a real electronic leadscrew with...
Making a Steinmetz Solid on a Lathe
Переглядів 101 тис.7 місяців тому
Here comes a short video on making a Steinmetz solid on a lathe. A few months ago I made a video about turning a special cube on the lathe and in the comments there was a hint on the Steinmetz solid. I never heard of this shape before but it is a very cool and satisfying to watch shape and it's doable to make this shape on a lathe. You just have to make little fixtures to hold it during turning...
Finally Proper Machine Controls - Electrical Cabinet For My Mini Lathe
Переглядів 47 тис.9 місяців тому
Button foils on Ebay: www.ebay.de/itm/394895504865 This was a long one! Almost two years ago I begun the plannings of a proper electrical cabinet and electric machine controls for my Mini Lathe. The reason for this was that the original motor controls died all of a sudden. This seemed to be a common problem on these Mini Lathes and instead of buying a replacement circuit board for quite some mo...
Making a Metal Bandsaw Length Stop With Mini Lathe and Mini Mill
Переглядів 23 тис.9 місяців тому
I'm using my metal bandsaw for almost two years now and are still very happy to have this machine as it makes my work a lot easier. But one thing bothered me for quite a while. There is no easy way of indicating the legth of the sawcut. The saw originally came with a sort of length stop but this thing was really windy and had no indicating for the lenght of the cut. So I designed my own version...

Beautiful job! Maybe you could have done some extra work to make a Set-Tru style backing plate had you known in advance of the possibility of run-out. Does this chuck have a detent action to keep the collet closed, or do you have to maintain some tension on the lever?
Think of WD40 as very thin paint. The SDS does not tell you everything. Listed ingredients are mineral spirits and very light mineral oil, which works as an effective penetrant and which would evaporate completely dry if they were the only ingredients, but they are not. There is an undisclosed minor percentage ingredient of what I believe to be linseed oil, which gives the product its water displacing and rust inhibiting properties and is responsible for the sticky residue. You can observe this residue if you pour some liquid WD40 into a dish and let it evaporate in a clean environment for a couple of months. You will get a yellowish residue with a wrinkled surface and characteristic odor of linseed oil. I have personally observed this. If someone were sufficiently motivated, they could run a chromatographic analysis to find the identity of the non-volatile residue for certain.
Beautiful. Thx for sharing.
Oh I wanted (and still do) one of these so much, my secondary school had one which I got to use precisely once, massive disappointment.
Heating parts with torch would make disassembly much easier.
Find your own style. Don’t rip off thisoldtony.
Did I?
The instruction is in the video.
good for the views , not for making money .
You are right ;)
Wow.... couldn't click this fast enough. First cnc I ever ran in HS. Own a digital fabrication shop now.
Hi, cool to hear! Thanks for sharing your story :)
Mr.Foster here: Firstly you do Dam good work, secondly love your engineering.and thirdly you are going to help me make my lathe better Thanks.
Thank you very much for your kind comment and feedback! I really do appreciate that! :)
Dear sir! I would like to purchasing that for sri lanka ples mentionl how to by it and the cost.thanking u.
Insane job!! Congratulations!! But I have one doubt: did you or did you not change the main two bearings of the spindle?
Thank you very much! There are still the original bearings inside the headstock but I will definitely change these some day.
Thanks for sharing!! I'm gonna make one for my lathe soon!
Thanks and good luck!
Beautiful! I bought one of these a few years ago and use it a lot. Great little machine for it's size and the turret is so fun to use!
Hi and thank you very much for your comment! Nice to hear, you have one too. I really like this little machine.
Почему биение фрезы такое большое в обоих вариантах патрона? Может дело в шпинделе? Есть видео проверки биения шпинделя?
why is the inch disable knob blurred?
I blurred all the knobs which reflect my image ;) I have to change the knobs to less shiny ones :)
Great work - Thanks for sharing Did you use a threading insert to scribe the lines ? Cheers
Nice work both practical and great looking
Adjusting the Tailstock lateral center makes little sense to me when the stock is being held in a Collet. Between Centers means two centers. Capice? Wakodahatchee Chris
Solche Vorbesitzer kann man sich nur wünschen 😮
Bravo 👏👏
You could use neodymium magnet to pull out the ball bearings.
Would love to see you do an emergency stop. Also; how about fitting a digital readout?
Very nice work sir.
Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. John 17:1-5
20 Years ago I saved a 5CNC from a fire alarm deluge. Some time later I lent this lathe to a friends father to do some wood turning ??. Anyway, after some time ,I asked for the lathe to be returned. Incredulously I was told it had been thrown away, because, it had been smoking! As it turns out, if you leave the axis idling the windings of the motors gets hot enough to burn the wood chips my friends father had been turning, thus leading him to think that it was on fire and throwing it away. Be cautious. shut down the stepper motors when not in use!
Very nice work sir
Ну и звукі
You will have better results with knurling if you use plenty of lubricants. And maybe a slightly slower speed.
9 “I watched till thrones were put in place, And the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, And the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, Its wheels a burning fire; 10 A fiery stream issued And came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, And the books were opened. 11 “I watched then because of the sound of the pompous words which the horn was speaking; I watched till the beast was slain, and its body destroyed and given to the burning flame. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away, yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. 13 “I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. 14 Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed. Daniel 7:9-14 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (YHVH, El Shaddai, Adonai, God of Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham). John 3:10-18
The different colors on the divisional board is very clever. It helps keep track of what’s what.
You’re a genius and your machining ideas are brilliant but you need to take more care when tightening work pieces down. You have too many mishaps because of the tremendous forces applied when cutting, drilling or milling. All these time consuming processes could be avoided by using more lubricants and applying more force when clamping objects. You can’t use too much lube when cutting or tapping and you can’t have enough force when clamping. You are too good to neglect these techniques.
I’m so impressed by what you’ve done. My god if they made and sold lathes of this size and quality we’d have tens of thousands of people buying them and becoming machinist overnight. It’s the crappy products with so many problems that cause frustration and causing people to walk away never learning and honing their skills. What I wouldn’t give to buy your machine.
I don’t want to spoil the party but you should use plenty of lube when tapping. It makes it easier, prevents breaking a tap and helps keep the tap sharp. Half the videos I see no lubricant being used while the truth is , you can’t use too much.
I inherited the non cnc model of that lathe. Didn't like it. I already sold it so Idon't know for sure but I think it had something crazy small like 500W. If you only make the tiniest of cuts it's possible to work on brass and even mild steel. But you can barely use a cutoff steel for aluminium, becuase the top slide weighs nothing and it uses regular metric M8 thread for a lead screw. So when you touch the material withn the steel it pulls the whole slide in resulting in the tiny motor overloading and the belt slipping. Absolutely useless. I'd rather get a better chinese lathe. The chinese ones are also way easier to modify.
how much do you charge to do that modification ?
First video I’ve watched on your channel. 😊 Apart from just about everything else, I particularly like that you finish the parts by adding some curvatures just to make them aesthetically more pleasing. 👌
Will you sell 1?
Oh eine erst cnc Maschinen wo ich Lehre gemacht hab so geil
Sir, thank you for the video. When you use the cheap AC adapter, does it remove metal too with decent depth, or just make it black?
Whats that other chuck you used?
I like that drill attachment
I think need add grblHALL, really….
Beautiful presentation! Pretty inspirational really. Danke!
6:12 So that brass insert turned onto a brass ring?
This is the 1st CNC lathe I ever programmed learned on…35 years later worked all over the world on the Apps for Mazak Deckel (DMG) starrag ..now @ WFL back in the uk…I would recommend anyone thinking of doing this for a career DONT pick something else
Good-looking pen with a nice thonky sound when laid down.
wow what is not to love about this machine!
overkill :)
